Designing & Building a Marco Rock Reef Tank Aquascape for My Waterbox 110.4 Tank - (Build Part 2)

About a year and a half ago I set up my first reef tank, a little Nano Reef, and I was so excited that I rushed through the aquascape design. Looking back at it now, that thing is basically just one big clump of rock sitting in the middle of the tank with corals crammed onto it. Bottom line, I made a lot of mistakes, and now that I'm building the aquascape for my new Waterbox 110.4, I wanted to actually slow down and figure out what I did wrong so I wouldn't repeat it.

The Mistake: Designing From the Front

Here's the thing about that nano tank. When the rock was still bare, before I glued a single coral to it, I thought I had built something great. I had little sections sticking out to the sides, a shelf here, a ledge there. I remember thinking, wow, look at all this surface area I have to work with.

What I didn't realize is that I was designing the whole thing from the wrong point of view. I was looking at it from the front, instead of thinking about where the LIGHT was actually going to hit it.

Once corals started growing in, the problem became obvious. A big mushroom coral ended up shading the entire rear section of the scape. A Duncan coral partially shaded another chunk. Areas that looked like great real estate from the front turned out to be completely useless because nothing could grow there without light.

Designing From the Top Down Instead

So for the 110.4, I flipped my whole process. Instead of building the rockwork and then figuring out where corals might fit, I started by looking down at the scape from above, the same way the light does, and planning coral placement first.

I actually cut out a bunch of little MDF circles in different sizes to use as placement templates. I'd hold one over a section of rock and think, okay, if a coral like this Duncan sits here, that's roughly the footprint it needs. Then I could space my rock structures out horizontally so I'd have multiple distinct spots, not just one crowded clump, where corals could sit without shading each other out.

Height matters just as much as horizontal spacing. A coral sitting low in the tank gets a very different amount of light than one mounted up near the surface. On my nano, because everything was one tall clump, most of my usable mounting points ended up bunched near the top where the light was strongest. This time I kept the main rock structures noticeably lower, which opened up a range of heights between the sand and the waterline. Some spots sit a little higher, some a little lower, so I have actual options for where different corals go instead of everything competing for the same real estate up top.

Using Islands for Standalone Corals

One trick I'm leaning on a lot more this time is separate little islands of rock. If I want a coral to have its own space without crowding into everything around it, like a green star polyp that spreads fast, I'll give it its own small, isolated rock structure instead of gluing it onto the main scape. That way it can grow out and extend without taking over the whole tank. It also lets me use the open sand areas underneath taller rock formations instead of leaving that space empty just because nothing else fits there.

Don't Forget the Fish

Design isn't just about corals, though. Fish need room to actually swim, not just perch around the edges of a clump. On my nano, my clownfish basically only had the perimeter of that one rock mass to patrol, and I even tried to build a small cave at the bottom of it, except I forgot to account for how much the sand bed would eat into that space. What I thought was a decent cave ended up being maybe an inch of usable clearance once the sand settled. Not enough for a fish to swim through.

This time I built in real clearance, about 3 to 4 inches of open space under the overhangs on both sides of the scape, accounting for where the sand line will actually sit. That gives the fish somewhere to duck out of the current, hide, or just cruise through instead of only circling the outside.

Building It: What Actually Worked

Once the design was mapped out, it was time to build. I ordered a mix of Marco Rock, including large "footer" pieces with a flat bottom edge, semi-flat shelf pieces, standard chunky pieces, and some small flat "feet" pieces meant for mounting little shelves. I also grabbed Carib Sea Reef Bonder glue and a bag of their coral scape sand.

Breaking the Rock Down

My first attempt at breaking the big chunks down used a flathead screwdriver. It basically just got stuck in the rock and accomplished nothing. A crowbar worked a lot better once I found the right angle and started splitting pieces from the side.

Key point here: don't throw away the little chunks and rubble that fly off while you're breaking rock apart. Save every bit of it. Those small pieces and even the fine powder are essential later for filling gaps and bracing joints so sand doesn't just pour straight through the cracks.

Gluing It Together

For the actual assembly, I bought a bag of cheap syringes with long metal needles off Amazon so I could get precise with the glue instead of squeezing it out of the bottle's nozzle. The process became a rhythm: place a piece, pack sand into the gap, squirt in glue, let it set for a few seconds, then add more sand on top and repeat. Building it in layers like this, rather than trying to glue big sections all at once, gave me a much stronger structure.

One practical tip, get disposable latex or rubber gloves, and a lot of them. I went through around a dozen pairs. The glue bonds to your skin fast, and once it's on your gloves it starts sticking to everything else too, so the second you get glue on a pair, rip them off and grab fresh ones.

I ended up building two separate rock structures rather than one giant piece, partly so I could actually lift them into the tank without straining myself, and partly because it gave me more flexibility to adjust the layout once the tank itself arrives.

Where Things Stand

Nothing about this design is fully locked in yet. Since I built all of this before the actual tank showed up, I used a cardboard mockup roughly the size of the aquarium just to get a sense of scale. Once the real tank arrives, I'll be able to see the rockwork from every angle, check actual clearances, and make adjustments, maybe extending a section out further, maybe adding another small shelf for one more coral spot. I'm not rushing this one. I rushed the nano and I'm still dealing with the consequences of that a year and a half later. This time I'd rather take my time and end up with something I actually want to look at for years, and remember to have some fun with it!
